Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is better known can often feel overwhelming. It’s usually one of those things that small businesses know about, but don’t know how to implement. Let’s work through this together and give you SEO confidence!

To start I would recommend downloading my beginners guide to setting up Squarespace SEO (download here). Work through the list, and once everything has been ticked off run a free SEO audit of your Squarespace website. This sounds a bit scary, but it’s not! I promise! There are two free websites I use to do this, and they explain in really simple terms where you’re at, and what SEO improvements need to be made on your website.

SEOptimer

Type in your URL and it will then scan your website. The results are shown graded A - F, like exam results and they will then put forward recommendations on things you can do to improve your SEO, and highlight if they are high, medium or low priority. The main feature I like about this site is it shows you what you are doing well, as well as what needs to be improved.

Ubersuggest

Again, you enter your URL, Ubersuggest runs an audit and then highlight issues that need fixing. They will outline how difficult things will be to fix, and what level of impact they have on your overall SEO. The downside of Ubersuggest is that if you use the free version they will only tell you the top 5 areas that need addressing. However, they still have a lot of useful information including site speeds on both desktop and mobile, and loads of keyword suggestions.

You’ll find that some areas are quick fixes such as including H1’s on each page, but others will take time and most likely involve content updates. Don’t let this overwhelm you though, take things one step at a time - running a business is a marathon not a sprint, and SEO won’t happen overnight. The fact that you are even reading into SEO and how to make improvements means you’re already one step ahead!
