Does Your Fitness Studio Website Need a Membership Area?

A membership area sounds brilliant in theory: exclusive content, recurring revenue, a community of loyal clients who keep coming back. But it's not the right move for every fitness business, and building one before you're ready can create more work than it's worth. Here's how to figure out if it makes sense for you right now.


What a membership area actually involves

A membership area on your Squarespace website lets you gate certain content or pages so only paying members (or people who've signed up) can access them. Think workout libraries, class recordings, nutrition guides, or member-only resources.

To do it properly, you'll need a way to manage sign-ups and payments, a system for delivering the content itself, and a plan for keeping that content fresh and valuable enough to retain members. It's more than just locking a page.


Signs you might be ready for one

A membership area could be a great next step if you've already got a strong, loyal client base and want to offer them more, you have digital content (like video classes or training plans) that clients are already asking for, you want to add a recurring revenue stream to your business, or you're looking to serve more people without adding more hours to your week.

If you're ticking most of those boxes, it's worth exploring.


Signs you might want to hold off

On the flip side, it's probably not the right time if you're still building your audience and client base, you don't yet have a clear picture of what the membership would include, or you're already stretched thin and adding more to manage would slow everything else down.

A membership area done well takes real thought and planning. If the foundations aren't there yet, it can end up feeling half-finished, which doesn't reflect well on your brand.


What about class schedules and booking?

It's worth separating these out. If what you actually need is a way for clients to view your class timetable and book spots online, that's a different setup to a full membership area. You can have a really solid booking and scheduling system on your Squarespace site without going the full membership route.

Many fitness studios find that getting their booking system right is the priority, and a membership area comes later once the business has grown into it.
