Why Your Website Doesn’t Need to Wait Until January

We’re about five weeks away from the Christmas holidays, which feels both far too soon and plenty of time. It’s also the point in the year when the “for next year” list starts filling up. You know the one. Things that aren’t urgent, aren’t getting done this side of Christmas, and get quietly moved to January.

So here’s the slightly awkward question: is your website sitting on that list?

I’m Ruth, a UK-based Squarespace designer, and I see this every year. Here’s why websites get pushed back, and how to get yours finished before the new year.

Why the website always lands on the “for 2027” list

A website is usually the first thing to get pushed back. It’s rarely the most urgent job on your list, it feels big, and there’s always something with a nearer deadline shouting louder. Client work, festive promos, school plays, a Christmas shop that somehow needs to happen before the 15th.

So it slides down the list, and “I’ll sort it in January” becomes the plan.

It doesn’t have to be a January job though. Plenty of people still do it that way, and then January arrives with its own pile of catching up, and the website slides down the list once again.

The waiting trap: why most new business websites never get finished

Here’s what I see more than anything else. Waiting until everything’s ready is the reason most new business websites never get finished.

The more you wait, the longer the list of things to get right first becomes. You decide you’ll tweak the branding a bit more, then rethink the services, then look at one more website platform, then get new photos done. Every one of those feels sensible on its own, but together they mean the finish line keeps moving further away.

What you don’t need to build a website

If you’ve been holding off because you don’t feel “ready”, I’d like to take a few things off your plate. You don’t need:

  • Your branding completely locked down

  • A perfect idea of every service you’ll offer in three years’ time

  • More time to research the right platform

  • All your copy and photos perfect before you start

None of that has to be sorted before a website can exist. Most of it can be improved once the site is live, and it’s much easier to refine something real than to perfect something imaginary.

What you do need to get a website live

What actually gets a website finished is much simpler. You need a clear process and a defined endpoint, so you always know what happens next and when it’ll be done. And you need a web designer who’s done it enough times to make the decisions feel easy.

The people who finish fastest aren’t the most prepared. They just stopped researching and started doing.

How a Website in One Day fits in

My Website in One Day service is built for exactly this. Here’s how it works:

  1. We prep together in advance, so by the time the day arrives, the big decisions are already made.

  2. We have one focused day with short check-ins along the way.

  3. You have a live Squarespace website by 5pm.

Five weeks is more than enough time to get booked in and get it done. I’ve got 3 slots still available (at the time of writing) before the end of the year, so there’s genuinely no need to wait until the new year.

Start the new year with your website already done

Picture this for a second. It’s the first week of January. The decorations are down, the inbox has been tackled, and your website is already live, working for you and bringing in enquiries, instead of sitting on a to-do list. It’s a lovely way to start the year, feeling ahead rather than playing catch-up.

Ready to get your website done before the holidays?

If this sounds like where you are, get in touch and let’s have a chat. No pressure and no jargon, just a conversation about whether now’s the right time.

In the meantime, I hope the run up to the festive season is a calm one, with plenty of mince pies and as few last-minute panics as possible.
